That is a rough area that has Gardena city limits on the west side of Vermont Avenue and the Los Angeles city limits on the east side of Vermont Avenue, known for many years as the "shoestring strip" because of its narrow 1 mile or so width and its shape which connects the South Los Angeles portion of the City of Los Angeles with the Harbor region. Since the middle 1980s, that Los Angeles city portion has been referred to as Harbor Gateway. More recently, it has been given the name of Harbor Gateway North, generally the portion south of El Segundo Boulevard and north of Redondo Beach Boulevard and Harbor Gateway South, generally the portion south of Redondo Beach Boulevard and north of Torrance Boulevard. Much of the region carries a Gardena mailing address within the 90248 zip code, which is one of three zip codes for Gardena, the others being 90247 and 90249. There is much confusion by many of the residents and businesses in that region.
